About World of Warcraft
Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft (WoW) is an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). World of Warcraft, a fantasy role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is set in the continent of Azeroth around four years after the events of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.
On November 23, 2004, the game—which had been revealed in 2001—was made available to celebrate the Warcraft franchise’s tenth anniversary. The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020) are the eight major expansion packs that World of Warcraft has received since its release. A ninth expansion pack, called Dragonflight, is currently under development.
Upon its first release in 2004, World of Warcraft was a huge commercial and critical success. It swiftly rose to the top spot among MMORPGs, reaching a peak of 12 million subscribers in 2010. By 2017, the game had over $9.23 billion in sales and had over 100 million registered accounts, making it one of the all-time highest-grossing video game franchises.
World of Warcraft Classic, a vanilla version of the game published in 2019, allowed players to play the core game before any of its expansions went live. Subsequently, versions of Classic for the second and third expansions were released with minor alterations. Unannounced World of Warcraft mobile spin-off game was canceled in 2022 by Blizzard and NetEase.
Characters acquire different talents and skills as they grow in complexity, which forces the player to better define each character’s set of skills. The two main professions available to characters are those that produce goods, such as tailoring, blacksmithing, or jewelcrafting, or those that gather resources, such as mining or skinning. All three of the secondary skills—fishing, cooking, and archeology—can be learned by characters. Characters are able to create and join guilds, which provide members access to the guild’s chat channel, name, and possibly other features like a guild tabard, guild bank, guild repairs, and dues.
In order to progress in World of Warcraft, you must complete quests. These quests are typically offered by NPCs. Players are typically rewarded for completing quests with a mix of in-game currency, equipment, and experience points. Characters can unlock new talents and abilities as well as discover new regions through quests. A large portion of the game’s narrative is revealed through quests, both through the text of the mission and through scripted NPC actions.
A quest chain is formed by a series of related quests, each of which is started by the conclusion of the one before it. In order to complete a quest and earn experience points and treasures, you may need to kill a certain number of monsters, collect a certain amount of resources, locate a tricky object, speak with a variety of NPCs, travel to certain locations, interact with objects in the world, or deliver an object from one location to another.
